Glutamic Acid Racemase from LactobaciZZus arabinosus*
نویسنده
چکیده
The existence of a glutamic acid racemase activity in Lactobacillus arabinosus has been reported by Narrod and Wood (1) and by Ayengar and Roberts (2). As has been pointed out by Meister (3) these observations with dried cell preparations would not exclude a mechanism for glutamic acid racemization in which alanine racemase is coupled with n-glutamic acid-nalanine transaminase and n-glutamic acid-L-alanine transaminase, as has been shown to be the case for Bacillus subtilis (4). The purification of a single enzyme with glutamic acid racemase activity has not been previously reported. This paper presents a method of purifying glutamic acid racemase, and describes some of the properties of the enzyme.

متن کاملThe Microbiological Determination of Amino Acids
After the development of methods for the determination of valine, leucine, and isoleucine (1) with LactobacilEus arabinosus 17-5 as the test organism, it was assumed that other amino acids essential for the growth of this organism could be determined by about the same procedure. However, it was soon discovered that glutamic acid is unique in its relationship to the growth of Lactobacillus arabi...
متن کاملAmino Acid Nutrition of Lactobacillus Arabinosus
The growth factors required by Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 have been studied extensively by Snell and Wright (I), Isbell (2), and Lewis (3). Investigation of the nitrogen requirement has been limited. Hydrolyzed casein has been found to supply the essential nitrogen when supplemented with tryptophane and cystine. Glutamic acid has been found essential (4), and quantitative levels have been de...
متن کاملIsoglutamine and the growth of Lactobacillus arabinosus.
The esential role of -glutamine in microbial nutrition and metabolism has been well established (Waelsch, 1952). Recently Ayengar et al. (1951) have described in detail the stimulating effect of the amide on the utilization of i-glutamic acid by Lactobacillus arabinosus. However, almost no published data exist which deal with the influence of iisoglutamine on bacterial growth. We wish to descri...
متن کاملCharacterization of three-fraction mycobacillin synthetase.
Mycobacillin synthetase lacks aspartic acid racemase, alanine racemase and glutamic acid racemase activities. The enzyme also does not respond to ATP-[32P]Pi exchange, nor does it catalyse the antibiotic synthesis in presence of amino acids of configuration opposite to that present in the molecule. Preincubation with optical isomers of opposite configuration inhibited the ATP-[32P]Pi exchange r...
